The Fall of House Cosmigrove (6)

“So?” Gray spoke behind the door of his room. “Am I supposed to do something about that? As far as I’m concerned, it’s more bodies for you to hide. Forget Stoker’s share. I won’t make my price go up. I won’t leave this room until I get it. You won’t call the police. And let me assure you – you certainly won’t hurt me.

“So, as far as I’m concerned, nothing has changed.

“Go to your lawyer. Sort the transfer out. You slip the proof under this door. I won’t even complain if you’ve got the first check ready. That’s when I leave. You bury whoever you need to. And that’s that. Our business is done. The rest is between you and the killer.

“Or don’t. And I call the police. And we go down together.”

“I’ll kill him.” Sofie paced around the dining room table. “We’re not giving him shit. You hear me? Nothing. We tell him whatever we need to do to get him out of there and then we get him and chop him to bits and we bury him with the rest.”

Mundus stared out the window. He squinted against the morning light.

“We’re not murderers.”

“Doesn’t make much of a difference now, does it?” My sister scoffed. “We’ve got three murders we’re hiding no matter what. What’s one more? There’s a good chance someone here did it, anyway. They’re certainly not going to be absolved.”

Or Gray himself was the culprit.

“In which case,” Sofia glanced in my direction, “he deserves to die, not be given a check!”

“Just to be clear.” Prospero sat at the head of the table, his hands covering his head, “I’ve been as neutral as I can be in this matter, but if I directly witness you killing someone, I’ll be the one calling the police. This needs to stop, one way or the other.”

“Oh, shut up!” She slammed her foot against the floor. “I’ve just had enough about you! You – the mysterious detective! You haven’t detected a thing! Three people have died under your watch, and all you've done is throw snark. You think you’re better than us? You don’t fool me. Your explanations sound smart, but they don’t actually contribute to anything, do they? You’re a fraud.”

Prospero raised his hands in the air, saying nothing.

Sofia marched over to him. “Why are you here, anyway? We’ve come this far together, you might as well share.”

“I’m bound by client confidentiality.”

“Whatever your client asked you to tell Father could’ve been the thing that started this whole thing!”

“And if it wasn’t, I’d be giving the culprit a nice red herring to throw our way.” He cocked his head. “I understand where you’re coming from, but–”

“You understand nothing.”

“Enough.” Mundus raised his hand. “Let’s go talk to Hastings.”

“Mundus. Mundus, please listen to me, this isn’t–”

“If nothing else, to hear his opinion. You know he’s not afraid to get his hands dirty. If there’s another way out of this or something else we can offer Gray to keep quiet, then there might be another way out.
